Not Nice Spice
My last birth story of the year had to be a December baby! I met Stacie through a health group and immediately loved her honesty. I was still a fresh mama and she was so sweet and warm. I was thankful to be included with a group of women who weren’t dishing out the cold mama shoulder (hello, be inclusive to new moms! It’s hard enough). We continued to keep in touch over social media with common interests, including how we chose to raise our families. Figuring out how to raise your family is never as simple as you set out. But it always falls into place. And labor is just the same! You start with contractions thinking, “This is it!” but realize quickly every good thing takes time. When you’ve had your fourth child and email the birth story only three days later, you know this isn’t your first time around. To top it off, Stacie is a FAB boy mama! I loved reading her reaction to people when they asked her about trying for a girl, and that she’s completely content with her little guy gang. Gender has so little to do with being content with your family. Something Stud and I learned the first time around, as we were completely shocked when the technician said it was a girl. We nicknamed her Rhonda, since the fighter Rhonda Rousey was all over the news. Each night I would have to give my tummy a tap and tell Chickadee to settle down and go to sleep. Turns out she’s the roughest and toughest chick in town! Each baby finds a way to complete the family and reaches beyond our expectations. Welcoming Wesley:
Matt and I had 3 happy, healthy little boys. We had just gotten a brand new puppy to add to the family, too. We always thought we wanted 4 children, but pregnancy, labor, and infancy were very difficult with our third. He just kept us on our toes in every way. I got my period back when he was about 8 months and my period was late the following month so I thought I was pregnant. I wasn't, but I did get pregnant the following month! It was a total surprise and shock. I told my husband after he had passed a very important test for work. I was nervous how he would feel/react. We hadn't discussed having a 4th much and the few times we did, he really thought he was done at three. I was so relieved that he was so, so happy! We were due December 19th—another December birthday for us. This is especially funny to me as I never wanted any of my kids to be born in December and now we would have two with December birthdays. Other than I had not lost all my baby weight from #3 and was starting this pregnancy at my highest, it was a fabulous pregnancy. I had no morning sickness and just felt great overall. On Monday, December 10th, my 19 month old woke up with a 103.5 fever. We could only get him into the doctor at the same time as my baby check appointment. My husband took him in and I went alone to my doctor. My blood pressure was high for me (140/90) so my doctor decided to strip my membranes and sent me to the hospital for further blood work and monitoring. I was only 1cm dialated when she checked me. I was finally released at 5:30pm and went home. The next morning I woke early with contractions. They were about 15 minutes apart. I woke up my husband and said, “Today may be the day.” But the contractions fizzled out for the most part. So I started my day. I work from home, and had a call with a client then caught up on emails etc. I was having occasional contractions. At 11 o’clock I took a shower and at 11:20am, I started thinking they were pretty regular again. We called my husband's mom to come over, as we might need her. I wanted to take the dog and kids for a walk and asked Matt to time my contractions. They were ranging from 3 to 1.5 minutes apart. He decided we should probably head back home. We got home and packed up to head to the hospital. Our doula met us at the hospital at 12:45pm. I was so worried I would only be 2 cm dialated, but I was 7 cm and 90% effaced! By the time they had finished all my blood work, monitoring, etc. we had been here 2 hours. I was taken to my room at 2:30pm. At 3:30pm I said I was ready to push. The nurses and midwife came in and I started pushing at 3:38pm. At 3:39pm our beautiful baby was born and they put him on my chest. My husband got to announce the baby’s gender and cut the cord when we were ready. I couldn't believe he was here already and that I had 4 wonderful baby boys!!!! Wesley Patrick is a total blessing to our family.
