Not Nice Spice
Summer is barely over but as the temperature has severely dropped, saving us from the hellish humidity we’re accustomed to, I stumbled upon a fallen leaf already turning. Honestly, my heart skipped a beat! What Upstate girl doesn’t love all of the festivals and mesmerizing changing foliage? I have cozy sweaters ready to go and snagged little suede wedges to dress up that classy mom-bun. And of course I’m working on perfecting a dairy free PSL (stay tuned!). But it struck me how we start new beginnings with so much gusto—we roll our sleeves up, have a plan of action, smell success everywhere we go. Yet, by the time of the fallen leaf we are beyond ready for change. Already mentally moved on even though we are still very much working through where we are. Just one leaf and I’ve said goodbye to summer. There is a good month of summer to go. I’m still very much in the middle. But life starts happening outside of the plan and each time a new plan is formed there’s a bump, and another, and a turn, and while we’re at it add a twist. These changes push us towards wishing away moments. We begin to push past what’s in front of us, what used to be what we were striving and aching for, and there begins the danger of the middle. How readily in the middle of seasons of our lives do we hurry things along, either claiming to already know the ending, the next step, or we’ve just grown such a distain for where we are instead of even giving pushback now we wash our hands? We take all of the ambition found in the beginnings and happily stamp goodbye at the endings we trying to rush along. Why not take that fervor and dive deep into the middle? Realize that in rolling our sleeves up we are allowing ourselves to be left vulnerable for growth not hurt. Allow ourselves to become uncomfortable for long enough to see the change in the middle season. Now we can celebrate the endings not because we’re merely done but we’ve succeeded. We found the power to push through the middle, even though we may have gotten a little muddled.
