Not Nice Spice
It’s easy not to see the good when you’ve conditioned yourself to watch out for all the bad. There’s always a bit of both, but losing sight of the goodness around us can quickly magnify even a small amount of negativity. Reading through Max Lucado’s Life Lessons: James reminds me to refocus where I place my attention. Have I put more importance on my problems, things I lack (such a relative term), or things that tempt me away from being my best self; or do I count my blessings one by one. As childish as that sounds, shifting my focus can make all the difference.
It makes for a better wife, mom, friend—a better self! I’ve taken time this past month to change a few things. We’ve started to convert our garage into a little oasis (gym, workshop, art studio). It sounds superficial and there are other projects that might seem like a priority, but a third baby and an Upstate New York winter has proven to be an easy way for us to let things slide. Not working out creates stress that spills into our marriage and causes us to lash out at our kids. Not having a space to create leaves me feeling bottled up and utterly restless, and sadly then resentful towards Stud and the kids. Stud and I need this retreat. We are taking the time to create for ourselves—taking a piece of the goodness that God has given us and creating an environment that promotes positivity and growth instead of temptation and grief. God has placed His goodness all around us, regardless of where we are in life. It’s our job to discover and utilize it.
